San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis proud of QB Alex Smith – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith had a breakout season last year as his team ended a long drought to qualify for the playoffs and reached the National Football Conference (NFC) championship matchup.
In the first game of the 2012 season, Smith has shown further improvement. He continued from where he had left off last year as 49ers defeated Green Bay Packers.
Smith was 20 of 26 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He did not send any interception, taking his number of passes completed consecutively without throwing any interception to 185. This is a franchise record for which tight end Vernon Davis has praised the
quarterback.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Davis has appreciated performance of the quarterback and the improvement he has shown in the past couple of years. Davis said of Smith’s new record:
“It’s pretty amazing, but it doesn’t surprise me. Since I’ve been here with Alex, when I look into his eyes I see determination. I see a guy that wants to succeed and he wants it bad… He’s doing a great job of taking charge as far as being a leader. That’s
why he’s one of the captains this year. He’s doing a great job at it, I’m very proud of him.”
Against Packers, Davis’ performance was also worth noting. The tight end caught three passes for 43 yards and managed a touchdown in the third quarter of the game to increase his team’s lead.
Davis is a precious player for the team and his performance backed by his speed, size and skills will continue to be essential for the team’s victory in this season.
The 49ers offence has also received strength this year after addition of veteran wide receiver Randy Moss and former New York Giants receiver Mario Manningham, providing Smith more options at receiving end of his throws. Moreover, Michael Crabtree is already
there to support the offence. Davis said of presence of these players in the team:
“It’s awesome playing with those guys because we work hand-in-hand. If the attention goes to them I get the ball and if it goes to me they get the ball.”
