San Francisco 49ers and C.J. Spillman join hands for three more years – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers gave a three-year contract extension to safety, C.J. Spillman, on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, ensuring his stay with the franchise for as long as 2014. The new contract is reportedly worth $6 million with $1.8 million in guaranteed money.
Spillman, 25, started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2009 with San Diego Chargers and was claimed off waivers by 49ers in 2010.
While announcing the contract extension, 49ers’ general manager, Trent Baalke, wished the player best of luck and hoped for a long-term association between the team and the player.
He said:
“C.J. is a high-energy, productive player with a strong team-first mentality who is still developing. We are pleased to come to terms with C.J. for another three years, and look forward to his continued contributions to our organisation, both on and off
the field.”
Spillman also seems satisfied with this development. He said after getting the contract extension:
“It’s a very good opportunity for me. I’m just trying to get better at every phase of what I can do for this team.”
This move was already expected and different media reports had earlier indicated that both parties had agreed to a three-year contract extension.
However, an official announcement was yet to be made.
In the last season where 49ers topped the National Football Conference (NFC) West division and lost the NFC championship game against New York Giants, Spillman recorded 18 tackles in the regular season and four during the playoffs.
While discussing his future plans, Spillman said that he would try to bring further improvement in his game. He expressed optimism about the team’s future and hoped that it would be more successful in the next season.
He said:
“I think we’re going to try and keep it going. With the group of guys we have, there’s no reason to why we can’t keep improving at what we’re doing.”
Spillman, who is good at covering kicks, is hopeful to master the other tricks of the trade and said that he is going to work out during offseason to bring betterments in his style and techniques.
Meanwhile, the general manager has said that the franchise could also hire more players from the free agency or during the upcoming NFL drafts.
