San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Scott Tolzien trying to improve everyday – NFL News
The San Francisco 49ers were able to reach the playoffs last season, thanks to the then first-year coach Jim Harbaugh and as the team prepares for the upcoming season it is not surprising to see the players paying attention to every minor detail and tip
given to them from the coach.
The same is the case with the backup quarterback Scott Tolzien who joined the team last year and has enjoyed working under Harbaugh.
Scott has handsomely embraced Harbaugh’s philosophy of learning something new daily. Whenever he attends any training session or classroom activity, he makes sure that he learns at least one new thing that day.
This, according to the quarterback, is serving him well and he seems to have enjoyed this more than last year as he was able to avail the offseason.
Owing to the National Football League (NFL) lockout last year, the players could not train with their coaches until training camp.
This is not the case now and for Scott this has been “awesome”. According to the details present on the team’s official website, Scott said:
“I think you realize the value of a true offseason and how much ground you can cover in a short amount of time. The bottom line I get from Coach Harbaugh is that every day counts. His words of advice are, “Always try to get one percent better each day,”
and over the long haul that’s going to be the difference. So that’s the kind of mentality I try to take every day.”
Since Harbaugh himself was a quarterback when he used to play in the league, it becomes easier for the players at the same position to train under him.
One of the prime examples is Alex Smith, who had a breakout season last year under Harbaugh. Scott also thinks that it is a great advantage for the players like him to have a coach who was a quarterback. He said of Harbaugh:
“He’s always got new things he’s trying out with footwork or fundamentals. It’s invaluable for all of us coming from a guy like him.”
It is not known when Scott will be able to become regular starter, but if he keeps on training under him he could get the role pretty soon with any other team, if not the 49ers.
