San Francisco 49ers bounce back as New York Jets left stunned – NFL Recap
San Francisco 49ers made a remarkable comeback after their Week 3 loss, whitewashing New York Jets, 34-0, in Week 4 game on Sunday, September 30, at MetLife Stadium.
Jets were given no chance to progress during the game that was supposed to be a nerve-wracking encounter, and especially after first quarter, during which no scoring move was made, it was assumed that the game would go on to a tight finish.
The Jets’ fans were so disappointed in their team’s effort that a majority of them did not even wait for the end of the game and left the stadium early.
The Jets allowed the 49ers to run the ball effectively, while their offence failed to create opportunities and was pathetic on third downs.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan was disappointed as well as frustrated with his team’s effort. He blamed the entire team including the coaching staff for the miserable defeat that also took their American Football Conference (AFC) East lead away. Jets are now placed
at second spot in the division with 2-2. Ryan said after the game:
“It starts with the coaches. The players aren’t going to be in on Monday or Tuesday. They have to dig deep and look down at themselves. As coaches, we need to look at what we’re doing.”
Quarterback Mark Sanchez had another disappointing game as his pass completion percentage once again stayed under 50. He completed 13 of 29 passes for just 103 yards and sent an interception. Sanchez said after the game:
“Guys are just upset and frustrated. This is not the way we imagined this game going and just left too many opportunities out on the field.”
49ers, on the other hand, showed their true class. They had to do so, especially after an upset defeat against Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 game.
They relied more on their running game and it paid them off. Their first score came in second quarter when Colin Kaepernick got a seven-yard run for a touchdown on a wildcat arrangement that took Jets by surprise.
David Akers got a field goal at the end of the quarter to stretch the lead.
Frank Gore got a two-yard run for a touchdown in third quarter as 49ers took their lead to 17 points.
Early in the final quarter, Carlos Rogers got a 51-yard fumble return for a touchdown, which was followed by a field goal from Akers and a touchdown from Kendall Hunter, who managed a one-yard run to reach the end zone.
49ers linebacker Patrick Willis said after the game:
“The win felt amazing. Coming off the loss we had, everybody had that taste in their mouth of defeat and we just wanted to get it out. We knew we were going to do that today and we got a win.”
49ers will now take on Buffalo Bills in Week 5 game while Jets will face Houston Texans.
