San Francisco 49ers cautious of Detroit Lions aggressive defence – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers have a very good and strong defensive unit, but it is not as aggressive as the defensive unit of Detroit Lions, who are going to face them in Week 2 game this Sunday.
Lions are renowned for their aggressive game-play, especially on the defence, and 49ers are well aware of what Lions are capable of doing.
According to the details present on 49ers’ website, offensive coordinator Greg Roman has acknowledged that Lions’ defence pose a threat to the improved 49ers’ offence. He said of the Lions:
“They are attacking and they are trying to destroy blocks and destroying blocking schemes on the way to the quarterback.”
49ers and Lions also faced each other last season. The game ended with 49ers’ victory, but the conclusion was marred by a controversy as the coaches of both teams scuffled a bit.
Lions displayed an impressive performance throughout the last season to qualify for the playoffs to end a long drought and they have further improved this season. Roman thinks of Lions defence:
“Tough, aggressive defence, attacking style. Not a heavy blitz team, but at any point in time they’ll dial up a blitz. So, you’ve got to be ready for it. I think it’s really added to their profile.”
Lions have made a strong start to the season as they defeated St. Louis Rams in Week 1 game. However, 49ers have much better offence than Rams, and Lions must keep in mind that they need a clear strategy against 49ers. Apart from being aggressive, they must
also read moves of 49ers, who defeated Green Bay Packers in the season opener.
Roman has acknowledged the threat Lions pose, but the 49ers offensive coordinator has complete faith in his players and believes that they will overpower Lions. Roman said:
“Everybody has a role, everybody has a chance to contribute, everybody’s excited about the week of practice. Everybody has a role in helping the team win. Thankfully we’ve got a lot of really good players that we can do that with.”
It is 49ers’ first home game of the season while Lions will play an away game for the first time in the 2012 season on Sunday.
