San Francisco 49ers clinch National Football Conference West title – NFL News
It took eight years for the San Francisco 49ers to end their playoff drought last season, but when they did it they did it in style. The 49ers won the National Football Conference (NFC) West title last season and many experts predicted that they might not
be able to perform the same heroics again.
However, the 49ers have proved their critics wrong as they have qualified for the playoffs for the second straight time, and their Week 17 win against the Arizona Cardinals have now earned them the division title yet again.
This is a special occasion for the 49ers, who have done amazingly well under head coach Jim Harbaugh, who took the team’s head coaching job last year.
According to the details present on the 49ers’ website, Harbaugh said after defeating the Cardinals and clinching a playoff berth:
“I’m extremely happy with the win. That was our mission – the one thing we wanted to get done today and we got it done.”
He added:
“Division champions means a lot. It gives you a chance to go for the big championship – that’s all you can ask for.”
All the players have expressed delight on reaching the postseason for the second straight time, and have hoped to get better results than last season.
Last year, the 49ers were defeated by the eventual Super Bowl champions New York Giants in NFC championship game. 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis said of qualifying for the playoffs for the second straight time:
“It means a lot.”
He added:
“It’s a blessing. I know we’re grateful for it. And I know are guys are really thankful. We’re going to continue that much harder to work because the ultimate goal… that’s still ahead of us and it’s going to be a tough road. But, as we said right now, we
like it tough.”
49ers have finished the regular season after winning 11 games and losing four games. They tied one game against the St. Louis Rams.
The Seattle Seahawks have finished at second place in NFC West. They have also qualified for the playoffs after winning 11 and losing five games.
