San Francisco 49ers dominate Seattle Seahawks in low-scoring game – NFL Recap
Running back Frank Gore rushed for over 100 yards against the team that is ranked among the best in controlling their opponents’ rushing game, as San Francisco 49ers defeated Seattle Seahawks, 13-6, on Thursday, October 18, at Candlestick Park to take the lead in National Football Conference (NFC) West.
The game witnessed strong performances from defence of both teams, while the offence, understandably, could not provide more scoring moves.
49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who was coming off a three-interception game, was not perfect against Seahawks, but he managed to weather the storm. Smith completed 14 of his 23 passes for 140 yards and scored a touchdown and sent one interception.
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson also had a rough day as he completed only nine of his 23 passes for 122 yards, while throwing one interception.
The surprising aspect of the game was top performances from running backs of both teams.
For 49ers, Gore rushed for 131 yards on 16 carries, while Marshawn Lynch managed 103 yards on 19 carries for Seahawks.
49ers and Seahawks are renowned for having good defensive teams that do not allow opponents to rush freely, but Gore and Lynch managed to penetrate these defensive units, showing how valuable players they are.
49ers safety Donte Whitner said after the win:
“We knew it was going to be tough. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Anytime you can win a tough football game like this, it really helps us going forward.”
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll shared his thoughts on the game, saying:
“We found ourselves in the midst of a real slugfest here tonight. I don’t think that’s a real surprise that it could have gone that way and it did. We had two good defences playing and two teams committed to run the football."
The defence of both the teams played superb game as depicted in the fact that there was only one touchdown scored in the entire game.
49ers and Seahawks got a field goal each in the first quarter, while Seahawks got another field goal in the second quarter to enter halftime with lead 6-3.
In the third quarter, Smith sent a 12-yard touchdown pass to Delanie Walker to bring his team in lead.
Leading by four points, 49ers scored a field goal in the final quarter, taking the score to 13-6.
With this win, 49ers took the total number of their victories this season to five, which is the highest in NFC West. If Arizona Cardinals (4-2) managed to win their Week 7 game against Minnesota Vikings, they will tie atop NFC West with 49ers. If not, then 49ers will solely enjoy the lead for at least a week.
49ers will play their next game against Cardinals, while Seahawks will take on Detroit Lions.
