San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh appreciates TE Vernon Davis – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was one of the favourite and regular receivers of quarterback Alex Smith’s passes last season, but the tale has been entirely different for the veteran this year.
Davis’ number of catches has relatively been lower this season, apparently because Smith has got a lot of other options this year and also because the tight end has been marked by almost all defences.
However, that has not discouraged Davis and he has shown great teamwork in 49ers’ recent victories that also helped them get the sole lead in National Football Conference (NFC) West.
In Week 7 game against Seattle Seahawks, Davis did not get the ball even once, while he had two catches for 34 yards in Week 8 game against Arizona Cardinals.
The important thing for both the team and the player is that the 49ers are on a winning track and gradually moving towards securing a playoff berth.
In such a case, a remarkable display of professionalism from Davis has brought him praise from the team officials.
Earlier, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman lauded Davis for being a team player and now head coach Jim Harbaugh has appreciated the tight end for supporting the team’s decisions.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Harbaugh praised Davis and said while answering a question:
“Do we appreciate a guy being a great player and a team player? Absolutely.”
Harbaugh added:
“And there are some things that some defences are doing, there’s no question about it. Just look at the tape, look at the action. They’re focusing a lot of attention on Vernon Davis, even before he gets into a route. Defensive ends are disengaging in their
pass rush and making sure that they chip Vernon on the way out, stay with him for three, four, five yards. Which doesn’t allow them to get in their pass rush lanes. So, that’s something that is affecting him getting the ball.”
49ers are 6-2 and two wins ahead of Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, who are ranked at second spot at 4-4 each in NFC West. 49ers have their bye in Week 9.
