San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh backs quarterback Alex Smith – NFL News
After naming Colin Kaepernick starting quarterback for Week 13 game against St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has backed Alex Smith to keep on practising as if he is the starter.
Smith, who has been reportedly cleared to play after recovering from a concussion, will not start against the Rams and will serve as backup to Kaepernick, who has served as Smith’s backup previously.
After replacing Smith, Colin secured two wins in two starts for the 49ers and Harbaugh is of the view that since Colin is still in form he should be utilised for this weekend’s game.
That noted, the 49ers head coach has asserted that he has no doubts on abilities and talent of Smith. According to the details present on the team’s website, Harbaugh said of Smith:
“Alex is a class act all the way. He’ll prepare as he is the starter. And that’s what we would expect. And be ready to go in and play and contribute to this football team.”
There is also a possibility that 49ers introduce both players against the Rams. Harbaugh has not ruled out giving playing time to Smith this Sunday, but he has also refrained from spilling the beans. He commented:
“Anything’s a possibility. I would assume nothing, or rule out anything. Or would we want our opponent to rule anything out. And I think, again, we’ve plowed that ground about as thoroughly as it can be plowed.”
Both Smith and Colin have played well for the team. Before being sidelined due to the injury, Smith led the team to six victories in eight games. The game during which Smith was injured and Colin replaced him ended in a tie, while Colin has got wins in both
the games he has started.
When asked about who is the better quarterback, Harbaugh denied comparing the two, saying both are talented players. He said:
“I’m not going to compare the two. They’re both good. They’re both extremely good. They’ve both played good. Evidenced by their play.”
The 49ers head coach has said that the decision is not made for the entire season.
