San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers shares views on missed field goal attempt against St. Louis Rams
San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers is among the best National Football League (NFL) kickers and has set a number of records, including tying the longest field goal – from 63 yards – but the kicker just could not score from 41 yards in overtime against
St. Louis Rams in Week 10.
Akers missed the game-winning opportunity and the game ended in a tie. Although the outcome of the game did not hurt 49ers’ first position in National Football Conference (NFC) West, it allowed other teams, especially Seattle Seahawks, to come closer.
To put the entire blame on Akers in not justified. 49ers were struggling to dominate the Rams in the regulation but in the final quarter in which Akers scored a 33-yard field goal with a few seconds left on the clock to force the game to overtime.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Akers regrets missing the game-winning opportunity in overtime. He said:
“The one on Sunday, I just tried to smooth the kick, not over-kick it and just kind of fell off the ball. When I do that, that’s why it kind of went left.”
He added:
“I had one that tied the game, stopped us from losing. And then the other aspect, when I had the opportunity to win the game, I didn’t come through.”
There is nothing Akers can do to change the outcome of last week’s game now, but the player can certainly hope to get the maximum results on receiving any opportunity in future.
“I want to win and I want people to feel good that I’m part of the team.”
Akers further said:
“I hope to get back on the horse and do a good job for the 49ers and the fans and my team.”
49ers’ next encounter is against Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. The status of quarterback Alex Smith is not clear for the game and even if the backup quarterback replaces Smith, Akers is expected to get some opportunities because 49ers tend to rely
on field goals.
Smith can only get the bad taste out of his mouth by leading his team to a win.
