San Francisco 49ers look to avenge NFC championship loss as New York Giants visit – NFL Preview
The 2011National Football League (NFL) is over for almost everyone, but defending champion New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers still have a score to settle.
After defeating 49ers in National Football Conference (NFC) championship game last season, Giants guaranteed their Super Bowl spot, while 49ers’ fumbles and turnovers ended their remarkable season somewhat disappointingly.
Just like the last season, 49ers have once again showed great potential to reach the title game this season and when they face Giants on Sunday, October 14, at Candlestick Park, they will look to further stretch their winning run while taking revenge of
the last season’s defeat.
The game is very crucial for Kyle Williams, who missed a couple of opportunities during the NFC championship game, allowing Giants to beat his team. He is desperate to seek redemption. He said of this game:
"There's a few teams that I look forward to. Of course after what happened last year I definitely want to get back at these guys. We look at it as if they have something that we should have had. We're going to make sure we don't leave anything on the field
again.”
49ers have won four games this season and their recent winning stretch has been commendable. They are getting aggressive on offence, while the defence is performing even better than last year. In their last two games, 49ers have given away a total of only
three points, while the offence has put up a total of 79 points.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said of 49ers’ recent performance:
“I think they’re obviously playing very well. Look at the last two weeks, my goodness. That’s a lot of points on the board and they’ve given up nothing. They’re very strong, they’re playing very well and they’ve been able to go ahead and capitalize in all
phases.”
On the other hand, Giants have also played well so far in the season, except for a few flaws. Their offence, as usual, has performed well under pressure, which will certainly help them against 49ers defence.
On the offence, Giants will have services of Victor Cruz at wide receiver, while participation of Hakeem Nicks is not yet confirmed. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw is in superb form and played well against Cleveland Browns in Giants’ Week 5 victory. Bradshaw’s
backup Andre Brown is also in prime form and hence the offence is well capable of giving tough time to 49ers.
However, Giants need to be assertive on special teams if they want to completely dominate 49ers.
The game is important for both teams as far as position of these teams in their respective divisions is concerned.
Giants are tied atop NFC East with Philadelphia Eagles, while 49ers are sharing the top spot in NFC West with Arizona Cardinals.
