San Francisco 49ers look to rebound as they face New York Jets – NFL Preview
After a shocking defeat against Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 game, San Francisco 49ers are looking to rebound as they face New York Jets in Week 4 game on Sunday, September 30, at MetLife Stadium.
It was surprising to see 49ers being defeated by Vikings after making such an impressive start to the season, showcasing their offensive as well as defensive strength against stronger opponents like Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
However, the defeat has become an eye-opener for 49ers, who must refrain from complacency after such an incredible 2011 season and astounding start to this season.
Against Jets, 49ers face challenges on offence as well on defence.
Jets have equipped their offence with impressive players while their play calling has also been commendable. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has performed relatively well this season so far and his backup Tim Tebow has been used in a Wildcat package to surprise
opponents.
Tebow has been seen throwing the ball, while he has also been placed at receiving end of Sanchez’s throws.
49ers, who already have a quality defence, have prepared well to counter the entire Jets offence and their running game. Safety Donte Whitner said of Jets offence and Tebow:
“They switch it up, they want to move Tebow around to distract you. If you’re not prepared, if you allow him to be a distraction, he can be a distraction. We’re going to know where he is at all times.”
Jets will be without their star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who is out of the season with an injury and his absence is a serious blow to Jets defence.
Against 49ers, Jets cannot commit any mistake, because although their opponents are coming off a loss, they are well capable of exerting pressure even on the teams that have home-field advantage.
Even Jets head coach Rex Ryan has acknowledged that 49ers are a tough team. Ryan highlighted some of the recent mistakes of his team and said:
“Whenever you put in a new game plan, it’s the little things like route depth, all the kind of stuff, we kind of lacked a little consistency in that yesterday. I’m expecting better things today. Going against San Francisco, you almost have to be perfect.
Going against this kind of team, it has to be precise. The only shot you’ve got is to do those things.”
In their last game, 49ers were exposed not only on defence but on offence as well and despite having many star performers like Alex Smith, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, they were unable to outscore Vikings.
49ers are at the second spot in National Football Conference (NFC) West, behind Arizona Cardinals (3-0). In order to dominate the division, they have to take the lead right from the start.
On the other hand, Jets are leading the American Football Conference (AFC) East division with two victories and can further strengthen their position if they beat San Francisco.
