San Francisco 49ers look to shake things up by starting Troy Smith
Although head coach Mike Singletary doesn't appear to be headed anywhere, the San Francisco 49ers are exploring ways to shake things up. They will likely start third-string quarterback Troy Smith when the 49ers take on the Denver Broncos in London, England
at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 31 October.
San Francisco 49ers owner, John York, confirmed that Singletary will remain head coach all the way through to the end of the season.
"Mike is our head coach," York told The Sacramento Bee. "We were grumbling because we lost the game. I think we grumble any time we lose a game."
Like Singletary, York is optimistic that the 49ers can turn things around and improve their 1-6 record.
Starting quarterback Alex Smith, who injured his non-throwing shoulder in last Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers, is expected to be out two to three weeks, paving the way for Troy Smith.
"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said about the switch. "He has enough of the offence to play."
Second-string quarterback David Carr replaced Alex Smith in last week's game, but Singletary has decided to hand the responsibility to Troy Smith for Sunday's game at Wembley Stadium.
"I talked to David Carr about it. He understands."
The 49ers have had a very rough start to the season and Alex Smith, although regarded as the bonafide starter, has not put up very good numbers. Carr didn't post stellar numbers as his replacement last weekend either, only completing 9 of 19 pass attempts.
In four seasons in the NFL, Troy Smith has only dressed for 14 games, mainly in a backup role for the Baltimore Ravens. Smith came over to the 49ers in the off-season and will be hoping to leave his new coach with a positive impression.
