San Francisco 49ers’ punter Andy Lee gets six-year contract extension – NFL News
The San Francisco 49ers have given a six-year contract extension to punter, Andy Lee, according to the team’s official website.
The announcement of the extension, which will guarantee Lee’s stay with the team through the 2018 season, was made on Wednesday, May 23, 2012.
Lee started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2004 after being selected by the 49ers in sixth round of that year’s draft.
In his eight-year career, Lee has been named to the Pro Bowl squad three times. He is also a three-time All-Pro.
Announcing the player’s contract extension, 49ers’ general manager, Trent Baalke, appreciated Lee’s services for the franchise and termed his extension ‘a step in the right direction’.
The general manager said:
“The 49ers are pleased to have reached a long term contract extension with Andy. Andy has established himself as one of the top players in the game at his position. He is a valued member of our organization and community. As we stated earlier this year,
it is our objective to keep the core of this team together long term.”
Lee’s services have also been commended by 49ers’ head coach, Jim Harbaugh. He was of the view that the punter deserved the contract extension and that he had helped the team win many games.
Harbaugh said:
“Andy is one of those guys that wins games for our football team. And it’s great to see guys that play all the games, play all 16, 17, 18 games and help our football team win games, get rewarded with a new contract.”
Meanwhile, Lee has also thanked the team management for awarding him the contract extension, saying that the decision makes him feel that the organisation and his teammates respect him.
The 49ers ended a long drought after qualifying for the playoffs last year. They lost the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game against the New York Giants and did not get a shot at the Super Bowl title, but they were satisfied with their
performance.
49ers had stated right from the start that they would be coming as a Super Bowl contender in the 2012 season and the addition of players like Lee is aimed at serving that cause.
