San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Alex Smith, not worried about contract extension – NFL News
San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Alex Smith, is apparently not bothered by the talks of his team interested in signing the veteran quarterback, Peyton Manning, and said that he is hopeful for getting a new contract soon.
Smith, who started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2005 with 49ers, was very impressive during the last season in which the team won the National Football Conference (NFC) West division title and gained a shot at the NFC championship.
In the regular season, Smith completed 273 passes of 445 attempts for 3,144 yards while sending 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
During the playoffs, he completed 36 passes of 68 attempts for 495 yards and sent five touchdowns without throwing any interception.
Smith’s accuracy was very commendable and his association with the new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, was even more appreciable.
During his early years, Smith was not able to display marvels and was deemed an underrated quarterback. However, his recent performance silenced all the critics.
Smith signed a one-year, five million dollar contract with the team last year and is awaiting the contract extension now.
Smith has said that he is not worried about prolonged delay in receiving the new contract. He said:
"You know, it's going. I'm not disappointed about anything. It kind of is what it is right now. I'm not worried about anything. I'll just leave it at that."
Earlier, different reports suggested that 49ers would be interested in signing Peyton Manning, who has recently been released by Indianapolis Colts.
If Manning gets the leading role in 49ers, Smith’s role would be restricted and he might not even get the contract extension.
However, 49ers have not yet confirmed their interest in Manning, which implies that Smith will be their starting quarterback in the next season.
Soon after the last season, head coach, Jim Harbaugh, also said that Smith would be the team’s starting quarterback next year.
He said:
“We're all in lockstep as an organisation that Alex Smith is our guy. It's well-documented. You saw the way he played this year."
He added:
“There are guys who play like 49ers, and what they do is they play their hearts out for our team. So Alex and others, (it's) going to be a high-priority to get those guys signed.”
