San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith questionable for Week 11 game – NFL News
As San Francisco 49ers prepare to host Chicago Bears in Week 11 game, the National Football Conference (NFC) West leaders have still not yet confirmed status of their quarterback Alex Smith, who is listed as questionable for Monday Night Football.
Smith suffered a concussion during Week 10 game against St. Louis Rams and even though he returned to practice field and looked better during the week the team is yet to announce his clear status for the game against NFC North leaders.
Smith cannot play without passing the National Football League (NFL) protocols that require a player with a concussion to pass some physical tests and get clearance from an independent neurologist to return to the field.
Initially, some positive developments were reported in Smith’s case, but the team has not yet announced anything officially and it looks like Smith’s participation will be a game-time decision. Smith’s participation will also largely depend on opinions he
gets from the doctors.
According to the details present on the team’s website, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said of Smith after analysing him on Saturday:
“He’s looked good. He’s looked very sharp.”
Roman further said:
“Alex is going through the protocol right now and that’s in the doctor’s hands.”
If Smith is unable to play against Bears, Colin Kaepernick, who replaced him against Rams, will start in Week 11 game. Left tackle Joe Staley said that the team is ready to play with any of the players leading the offence. He said:
“We’re trying to do our best.  No matter who the quarterback is, our job is to create a clean pocket for them.”
Meanwhile, Bears head coach Lovie Smith has already said that his team would prepare for both the quarterbacks. He further mentioned that since 49ers rely more on running game than passing the ball, he would focus on stopping the run game.
On the other hand, Bears have officially ruled out quarterback Jay Cutler for Week 11 game. Cutler got a concussion in Week 10 and the quarterback apparently failed to recover and was left behind. Since Bears are already in a strong position and have bright
playoff chances, they decided to give rest to Cutler.
