San Francisco 49ers select wide receiver A.J. Jenkins in first round of 2012 draft – NFL News
The San Francisco 49ers had a remarkable last National Football League (NFL) season and their sturdy defence played an important role in the team’s victories.
However, they struggled slightly on offence and they had already planned to add strength to their offensive unit even before the end of the season.
During the free agency, they signed former New York Giants’ receiver, Mario Manningham, and another veteran receiver, Randy Moss.
As if that was not enough, the 49ers have selected University of Illinois’ receiver, A.J. Jenkins, as 30th overall pick in first round of 2012 NFL draft.
Jenkins is more than delighted after being selected by the 49ers and thinks that the team is a perfect fit for him.
According to a report from AP, Jenkins did not believe his selection when he got first call from the 49ers. He thought that his cousin, who had earlier made a fake call just to tease him, was doing it again.
However, it turned out to be an authentic call and the player was pleased to know that he was the first pick of 49ers.
Jenkins said:
"I'm out of words right now. I thought it was the perfect fit to be honest. I didn't think the phone call was going to come so soon. I'm honoured and I'm blessed. It's crazy.''
49ers had also hosted Jenkins for a pre-draft interview. During his visit to the team, Jenkins met with different officials including 49ers’ head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who also gave the player a football quiz to answer.
While talking to media after the end of first draft day, Harbaugh shared his views about Jenkins and said that the management was pleased to have the player in the squad.
Harbaugh said:
“It was a great visit when A.J. came in. Everybody really enjoyed being around him. We had a very nice lunch, had a nice meeting on football. I gave him the quiz and he scored very well. I won’t compare him to any other players, but he scored very well.
He’s a bright guy. A bright football guy. Gold helmet guy. Somebody that we’re really pleased to have.”
49ers have a total of six more picks left in the remaining two days of the draft.
