San Francisco 49ers tear apart San Diego Chargers’ defence in preseason finale – NFL Recap
San Francisco 49ers offence looked unstoppable against floppy San Diego Chargers defence in the fourth and final preseason game on Thursday, August 30, 2012, as the former eased past the latter 35-3.
It was also a phenomenal game for tight end Delanie Walker who was given an ample amount of playing time. He spent a bit more time on the field as compared to the other starters. He last played in the first preseason game of this offseason on August 12.
He did manage to score a touchdown during the game. After the game, Walker said:
"I missed two preseason games, so just the opportunity to go out there and play, I took advantage of it, and I had a great time. I wanted to get my feet back under me, make sure the knee was good. I felt like everything was perfect and had a great game."
On the other hand, Chargers looked miserable on both sides of the field. Although they rested most of their starters, it showed that their backups are not capable enough to deal with the quality opponents.
Chargers starting quarterback Philip Rivers played just the first quarter of the game and completed eight out of ten passes while covering 89 yards.
49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick also scored two touchdowns and looked to be a strong backup behind Alex Smith.
At the start of the game, running back Kevin Hunter showed what he is capable of with a strong run in the first play, but it was rookie Anthony Dixon who managed to score the 49ers first of five touchdowns.
Quarterback Kaepernick then threw a superb 32-yard pass to Walker. Coming into the second quarter, Chargers failed to cover more ground against superb performancee by 49ers defensive team.
Rookie wide receivers A.K. Jenkins caught a 12-yard pass from Kaepernick to reach the end zone. The first half of the game ended with 49ers leading 21-0.
Josh Johnson took the quarterback post for 49ers in the second half and did not look hesitant to show his skills. He immediately got into action and threw a long 51-yard pass which was caught by receiver Nathan Palmer.
During the last minute of the third quarter, Palmer managed to give a three-yard pass to tight end Garrett Celek who went on to take it into the end zone for a touchdown.
Chargers finally managed to score with a 27-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding. It was a disappointing game for Chargers who wanted to end the preseason on a high.
