San Francisco 49ers use franchise tag on Dashon Goldson, agent says player is open to more options
San Francisco 49ers placed their franchise tag on safety, Dashon Goldson, on Friday, March 2, 2012, but the player is yet to sign the offer and his agent, Ben Dogra, has indicated that he wants something more from the franchise.
Goldson was selected by the 49ers in the 2007 National Football League (NFL) drafts. After playing for the franchise for four years, he re-signed with the team after agreeing to a one-year deal last year.
If he does not re-sign again before March 13, he will become a free agent.
From the last three seasons, he has been playing as the starter.
In the regular season of the last season in which 49ers won the title of National Football Conference (NFC) West division, Goldson started 14 games and recorded 67 tackles. In the postseason, he had 16 tackles to his name.
While announcing the decision to tag the player, 49ers’ general manager, Trent Baalke, said that he wants Goldson to stay with the 49ers for more seasons.
He also said that the franchise would try to reach an agreement with the player in the future so as to guarantee his stay.
The general manager said:
“Dashon has been a 49er since we selected him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. By using the franchise tag on Dashon, it affords us the opportunity to continue to work on a long-term contract with him, while also ensuring he will be a 49er for a sixth
season, in 2012.”
Meanwhile, no official word has yet been given by Goldson, but his agent, Dogra, seems to be in no hurry to sign the offer.
He said:
"There are no immediate plans to sign the franchise tag. We will continue to speak with the 49ers."
If Goldson decides to accept the tag, he will receive a salary of $6.2 million in 2012.
Since the tag is ‘non-exclusive’, it allows other teams of the league to hire Goldson. If the player is offered huge amount by any other team, 49ers will have an opportunity to match or exceed that offer or else they would have to let the player go.
If Goldson joins any other team, 49ers will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.
