San Francisco 49ers win the NFC West division title by defeating St. Louis Rams – NFL Week 13 Recap
They did it, and with some style! The overwhelming modus operandi adopted by San Francisco 49ers on Sunday left St. Louis Rams in awe as the former won its 10th game of the season to clinch the National Football Conference West
division title and secure a playoff-spot.
In the week 13 game of the National Football League current season played at the Candlestick Park, 49ers convincingly defeated Rams 26-0 to get the entry pass for the post season after around nine years.
"We want to make it to the championship. It's something we've been wanting for a long time," 49ers’ Tight end Vernon Davis said.
It was a special day for running back Frank Gore, who needed just 22 more rushing yards to become the leading rusher in the history of the franchise. He managed 73 yards in the game to beat the NFL Hall of Famer Joe Perry’s record
of 7,344 yards. He celebrated his record and the team’s victory together.
"There've been some tough years here," quarterback Frank Gore said. "To get an opportunity to get to the postseason and to get it early, that's a blessing."
49ers were all over the game and dominated Rams right from the start. A 36-yard field goal by David Akers in the first quarter was the first scoring move of the game. In the second half, Akers scored two more field goals, one from
19 yards and the other from 28 yards, to take the halftime score to 9-0.
Quarterback Alex Smith sent a 52-yard pass to Michael Crabtree who scored a touchdown in the third quarter. Following it was Akers’ another field goal, this time from 34 yards.
In the final quarter, Alex Smith came in action again. He found Kyle Williams from 56 yards to get the final scoring move of the game in the form of a touchdown.
The victory was a response to all the critics who predicted before the start of the season that 49ers would not be able to make it to the post season. Coach Jim Harbaugh said that the victory was a result of the players’ hard work
and commitment.
"This step, this game today is for all those strong and mighty men who have been carrying the flag for this many years," he said. "Each year that they've been here, thinking that was going to be the year, the year we go to the
playoffs ... and there's disappointment when you don't make that."
This was the 10th defeat for St. Louis Rams. They only have two victories to their credit and are placed at the bottom of the NFC West division.
