San Francisco Giants' second baseman Marco Scutaro comes back for three more years – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants won the 2012 Major League Baseball World Series title, but just to win this prestigious prize was not the intention of its top management instead they wanted to keep their 2013 season’s winning hopes alive as well.
This was a tough task as their three main players, second baseman Marco Scutaro, centre fielder Angel Pagan and relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt, who performed tremendously in their late winning run, had filed for free agency after the season.
However, the Giants' front office kept their finger crossed and started looking ways to re-sign all these three players for next potential seasons.
Re-signing two of their main players Pagan and Affeldt earlier, the Giants' now re-signed Marco Scutaro as well. He will be playing for the Giants for three more years as he signed a hefty $20 million deal.
"If he can survive (Matt) Holliday at second base, it gives me a lot of confidence he can survive into his late 30s," said assistant GM Bobby Evans in a light-hearted reference to the memorable NLCS collision.
He said and explained further, ''He was a priority from Day One, He was a key part of our 2012 success and served as a tremendous veteran presence.''
Evans added with more detail, “They were our priority, We had the benefit that all three wanted to come back. We have a very special group, and they all showed loyalty in coming back to us and the fans. They could've stayed out there and tried to get bigger deals. It's a tribute to them."
Scutaro played brilliantly in last Major League Baseball season. He finished with .306 hitting average along with seven homers, 74 RBIs and .348 OBP. Overall his ten-year career hitting average is also consistent at .276 along with 75 home-runs, 478 RBIs and .340 OBP.
Many believe that Scutaro’s re-signing with Giants is a healthy sign for his game as well. Though he will be benefiting the Giants’ top order, but this is also a productive development for his game as he will play more aggressively in the coming seasons.
