San Francisco Giants: Defending the Championship with injuries a cause to worry
As the San Francisco Giants start to defend their World Series Championship, their encounter on Opening Day against the feisty Los Angeles Dodgers could be a cause for some worries. The Giants currently have some key players that are out of action due to
injuries.
Players such as Brian Wilson and Cody Ross are on the disabled list and finding themselves out of action for close to 15 days. Wilson is the Giants’ main reliever and will pose some serious challenges for the team if he is not back soon. Not only are fans
worried, but it seems that the team is also a little shaky without their start reliever in the line-up. The Giants will be looking to adapt their strategy against the Dodgers as they will want to start the season off on a positive note.
Giants’ general manager Brian Sabean also seems to lacking a little confidence as he recently commented that the team might not have enough depth in their line-up to put up a decent defence of their Championship title. However he did go on to further state
that this situation will only boost the competitiveness of the Giants and will make them a winning team in the season.
It is critical for the Giants to maintain some confidence going into the regular season. Most teams understand the difficulties involved with having injuries to key players and the impact that it can have on the performance of the other team-mates. The Giants
are a team that is stacked with some incredible talent and it is now high time that some of these players start to perform as others are injured.
Since the Giants are the defending World Series Champions, every team in the League will be looking to take it to them by elevating their performances and doing whatever it takes to beat them during the regular season match-ups. It is basically like walking
around with a big target on your back when defending the title. Each team will be critically analyzing the performance of the Giants and figuring out ways to exploit their weaknesses.
The Giants do have some quality player that can be used as substitutes. These include Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez to name a few. The team will not be overly stressed as they still have players like Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez,
Bumgarner and Barry Zito as starters. Each one is capable of carrying the team on any given day. With players of this calibre, other teams will still be hesitant while confronting the Giants on the field.
Regardless of injuries, the Giants are a formidable team which is full of talent and confidence. Whether they are favourites to repeat their tremendous performance of the previous season is still a big question mark that will be answered once the regular
season begins. It will be interesting to see if the Giants will be able to carry their winning momentum into the new season and get the same results like they have managed to do in the past.
As all the teams are fired up and looking to put in a good performance during the start of the regular season, nobody can count the San Francisco Giants out.
