San Francisco Giants’ Jeremy Affeldt makes surprise visit to Bryan Stow – MLB News
Bryan Stow, the 42-year-old paramedic that was beaten at Dodger Stadium and remains in a coma since March 31, was visited by San Francisco Giants’ Jeremy Affeldt in the hospital.
It was this particular team’s game against the Dodgers, where Stow was beaten at the tainted Stadium.
His apparent crime was that he was wearing a Giants’ jersey in support for his team that aggravated two men in Dodger gear to such an extent that they beat him to a state where the doctors had to put Stow under a medically induced coma so that the damage
to his brain could be halted.
While Stow’s condition under the medically induced coma is improving, he still has not shown any major progress and the doctor’s biggest concern at the moment is keeping him stable. He is under heavy sedation so that seizures, as a result of the attack can
be kept at bay. On the other hand, one of the suspected assaulters, Giovanni Ramirez has been arrested and is currently being held on a staggering $1-million bail.
This was obviously good news for Stow’s grief stricken family and in an effort to continue the good news, Affeldt visited them and presented Stow’s family with a banner from the team. Affeldt took part with Stow’s family to pray for his well being at San
Francisco Hospital, where he is currently admitted.
Upon describing the emotional scene, Affeldt said, "I grabbed his hand, told him who I was and prayed with him a little bit and encouraged him, his eyes opened up, and I think he kind of looked over my way. I was able to do that and get more of what was
going on and what had taken place. So, for me, it was a big deal."
Affeldt was one of the players who had taken the fore-front to address the fans of both rival teams in the first game after the shameful incident. He called for peace and condemned the attack as he constantly reminded the crowd that there was no room for
violence in the historical rivalry between the two teams.
Many would think that this is a publicity stunt to boost the players fan base or ratings. Aware of the accusations that may fly his way Affeldt said that he went up to meet with Stow and his family because he was ‘compelled’ to and was not looking for any
sort of publicity.
He said, "It kind of put me in an interesting mood. You're a little humbled, a little melancholy mood. It shows you there's more to life than this game."
Affeldt felt like his visit to Stow gave him a much better understanding of what his family must be undergoing and hoped the Giants will do more to assist Bryan’s family in whatever way that they can.
