San Francisco Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez on disabled list – MLB News
Jonathan Sanchez was sent to the 15-days disabled list after the San Francisco pitcher failed to perform up to the mark in June due to tendinitis in his biceps. The left-hander, said to be in need of mental break as well, is expected to recuperate in the
next two weeks.
"It's been in there a little bit, but they had it under control," Bruce Bochy said. "You can get it under control, but if you don't knock it out, it gradually gets worse. It started to affect him early in the game. You saw his velocity go down."
Sanchez was aware of the significance this decision held for him."We did the best thing for the team and for me," Sanchez said. "I wasn't pitching well. We need to win some games, and I need to get better."
This month has not been extremely fruitful and enriching for Sanchez due largely to his inability to go beyond five innings more than once. With his left-biceps tendinitis, what Sanchez could do best at this time was rest.
The San Francisco Giants which had remained the last year’s champion did not have a particularly good start this season. Their record still does not sound very impressive considering the fact that they were expected to prevail with the best of players on
their side.
Sanchez, who was initially insistent that he was doing very well as early as last Friday, had walked six and had hit a batter in just over four innings. Over the five starts in June, Sanchez has a lead with 59 walks in the Majors.
However, there also lies inherently good news for the team as well. The departure of Sanchez in its fold has the return of Barry Zito. He was ready to start for the team, as he threw a complete game shut-out last week in triple-A.
Having got his name enlisted in the roster, Zito has given a breather to San Francisco. His predecessor Sanchez has been struggling lately as he has been 5.9 per nine innings compared to 96 of them in the last season of the National League.
Apart from somewhat unsatisfactory performance that the Giants put initially, the team leads the NL West Standings with 44 wins and 34 losses, having an RA of 269.
As the Giants have sent the starter Sanchez to the disabled list and Zito put back in, there are hopes that the team will make inroads into the domain of earning the title this year. However, the team is looking to improve their performance and with the
loss of Sanchez, it will be tough to make adjustments. The return of Zito will help the Giants put in more consistent performances in their next match-up.
