San Francisco Giants: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
With an incredible 61-48 win-loss record, San Francisco Giants were placed at a very healthy position in the league’s Wild Card standings. Although they faced a humiliating 3-0 series defeat against Cincinnati Reds, the overall quality of their game play
had been quite satisfactory in the month of July 2011. With series victories over Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in July, Bruce Bochy and his men were looking in great shape.
Looking to become World Series Champions for the second straight time, the Giants were searching for some consistency in the month of August 2011. However, as it turned out, they had a forgettable start to their first three match series of the month against
Arizona Diamondbacks. Losing the plot completely, the Giants made crucial unforced errors in the opening game to let their rivals take a 1-0 lead in the series.
The Giants failed to deliver the goods in the following game as well to let the opposition team secure a comfortable 2-0 series win. It will not be wrong to say that the leading NL West team was outplayed in almost all departments of the game. Bruce Bochy
aimed to cheer up the fans with a strong performance in third and final game of the series.
Ryan Vogelsong won his career best sixth straight decision and Orlando Cabrera hit a two run home-run and drove in three runs to lift the Giants to a sensational 8-1 win in game three to restore some of their lost pride.
"Man, finally. I was starting to worry," said Cabrera. "I'd like to believe if you win the World Series you have to hit at some point. It's basically the same team."
"I think it's a little too early to be pushing the panic button," Vogelsong said. "Obviously I knew we'd lost five in a row and we needed to win."
The Giants looked completely out of sorts in a four match series against Philadelphia Phillies, losing three out of four games which damaged their win-loss record to 62-52.
Another series loss against Pittsburgh Pirates did not help the cause either as the panic butting seemed to have been pushed inside their camp. Overall, the month of August did not prove to be a productive one for the Giants as they lost more games than
they won, which meant they needed a miracle to happen in September to qualify for the post-season.
The main area of concern for the Giants was their lack of consistency throughout the season. August proved no different, as the team struggled against some of the top tier teams in the league. The Giants were looking for a better performance in September
as the season was coming close to ending.
