San Francisco Giants: Regular season results – MLB May 2011
San Francisco Giants had a very poor start to the season. With a 13-13 win-loss record in the regular season, things were not looking very bright for the defending Champions.
Bruce Bochy and his men were hoping to turn things around with strong performances in May 2011. Although the Giants did not have a great start to the month, they were soon able to find their form and they ended the period of thirty days on a positive note.
In a three match series against New York Mets, the Giants looked in supreme touch. In game one, they held their nerves to clinch a narrow 7-6 victory.
Claiming their first series victory of the month, the Giants lifted their game to a higher level and they crushed their rivals 2-0 with brutal force in the third and final game. Tim Lincecum was the starter of the show as he struck-out 12 to surpass Christy
Mathewson for most double-digit strike-out games in Giants’ history.
The pitcher allowed only five hits in seven innings to help side secure a comfortable win over the Mets.
"Windy and wet is kind of what I'm used to," Lincecum said.
"Terrific job," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's one of those special guys, when he's had to turn it up a notch he can do it."
Looking to improve their win-loss record, the Giants were absolutely brilliant in their next three match series against the Colorado Rockies. Bruce Bochy’s side emerged victorious in each encounter to improve their win-loss record to 18-16.
The Giants had to work hard to secure a win in the opening two encounters. In game one, Freddy Sanchez scored the winning run in the ninth as the Giants rallied past the Rockies in a thrilling game.
“It was a great win for us. A lot of guys came through in some big situations," Sanchez said. In the second game of the series, the Giants crossed the finish line in great style. Mike Fontenot was wonderful with his glove in the top of the ninth inning and
he did a great job with the bat as he helped claim an important victory.
The Giants then earned series victories over Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals to end the month with a decent 29-25 win-loss record. The month of May proved to be decent for the Giants.
The team was starting to build some momentum, but lacked consistency in their play. The Giants were looking to pull things together and start playing like defending Champions. San Francisco is a team with immense talent and it was now time for that to show
in June.
