San Francisco Giants accomplish 7-5 win over St. Louis Cardinals - MLB Update
The World Series defending champions, San Francisco Giants, are again moving positively towards the 2011 title as the club defeated the current National League leaders, St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 at Busch Stadium, Missouri on Wednesday, June 1 to make their
position strong in the four-game series 2-1.
The Giants, who has gone under 3-0 deficit until the fourth inning due to wobbly pitches of their starter Tim Lincecum, came from behind and won the game in the eleventh inning.
As the Cardinals’ Ryan Theriot, Skip Schumaker and Daniel Descalso have scored an RBI each and their starter Jake Westbrook held the Giants scoreless until the sixth inning, the Giants have gone under great pressure.
However, Cody Ross doubled to deep right centre-field for an RBI single to nip the scoreless game for the Giants in the top of the sixth inning. Eli Whiteside and Andres Torres followed Ross with an RBI single each to tie the game at three-all until the
end of the inning.
Miguel Batista, who has replaced Westbrook to complete sixth inning without allowing further runs, allowed the Giants’ first baseman Aubrey huff a devastating 438-feet long one-run homer which put the Giants one run ahead in the seventh inning.
Nevertheless, in the bottom half of the inning, Allen Craig launched an equally valuable two-run homer off Lincecum to take the Cardinals back into a leading position with 5-4.
Lincecum was disappointed with these runs before he saw his batters take the lead in the eleventh inning.
After the game, Lincecum said, "Early on balls were kind of finding holes and finding places to land. Pitchers pride themselves on shutout innings after you get a lead and I just did not do that. You have to tip your hat to Craig; he put a pretty good swing
on the pitch."
After the seventh inning, Batista and Lincecum both handed the ball to relievers. Batista handed the ball to Eduardo Sanchez, who tossed a scoreless eighth, while Javier Lopez, who remained scoreless in the eighth inning, replaced Lincecum.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Cardinals were enjoying a 5-4 lead when their manager Tony La Russa replaced Sanchez with Fernando Salas in order to avoid any chance of yielding a score. The move worked for the Giants as their right-fielder Nate Schierholtz
managed to touch a game tying RBI single while closer Javier Lopez held the opposition from getting a leading run to force the game into extra inning 5-all.
Ryan Franklin and the Giants’ Sergio Romo each remained scoreless in the tenth inning compelling the game to enter into the eleventh inning. In the top of this inning, Nate and Brandon Crawford both scored an RBI each for the Giants to raise it to 7-5 while
closer Brian Wilson threw a perfect inning to end the game with the 30th win for his club.
