San Francisco Giants advance into World Series by defeating St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 – MLB NLCS Recap
San Francisco Giants advanced into World Series as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 in Game 7 of their seven-match post season National League Championship Series on Monday, October 22 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California.
"We're going to the World Series, this is unbelievable," series MVP Marco Scutaro said.
Matt Cain felt the responsibility and performed with big energy. He pitched over five innings exceptional spell and literally won the game for the Giants.
"These guys never quit, They just kept believing and they got it done," Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said.
Giants came out at their home field with confidence as they just had beaten the Cardinals in Game 6 on Sunday and tied the series. Along with many experienced players, the Giants had Cain, who was ready to take revenge of his defeat of game-three when he was hammered by the Cardinals’ batters big time.
"I think to do it, the guys actually have to believe it can happen," Buster Posey said.
On the other hand, the Cardinals, unleashed Kyle Lohse but despite his good and consistence performance all season long, he lost his control in this all important game and literally proved disastrous for his team.
He pitched two innings and allowed five runs and six hits. Striking-out one, he could not maintain his ERA which rose to 7.04 with an exceptional pace.
"It's about the team that's hot, and we went on a cold streak, We got to this point by being that team that was hot and taking advantage of opportunities. But we just couldn't make it happen these last two games," Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny said.
Cain however, remained calm on the mound and did not let the Cardinals' batters to play him freely. He pitched 5.2 innings and did not receive any run on five hits. He struck-out four and remained calm on 2.19 ERA.
Not only Lohse, but a couple of Cardinals' relievers were also hammered with big hits and lost the game for their team. Relief pitcher Joe Kelly pitched 0.2 innings and allowed two runs and two hits on his 4.50 ERA.
