San Francisco Giants apologise for General Managers’ anti-Cousins comments - MLB News
When General Manager for the reigning World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants, Brian Sabean personally attacked Scott Cousins on his weekly radio show, everyone knew that he had gone too far. He probably realised it soon enough and so did the rest
of the Giants who set out to do damage control as soon as they could.
The loss of Buster Posey from the Giants’ line-up for the entire season is bound to leave an impact. Fans have staged protests, shown their support and have gone as far as to threaten Cousins, who was the other half of the home plate collision. To have the
fans voice their opinion and curse at Cousins is acceptable on some level but the same cannot be said for the longest reigning General Manager of the Giants who expressed his thoughts on Cousins in his weekly radio show.
In an interview he let his emotions prevail, which is something you aren’t really allowed to do when any wrong word you say might act as a catalyst to charge up the already blood-hungry fans that are sending death threats to Cousins.
Sabean began his rant with a comment about how baseball would be a better place without Cousins. His exact words were, "If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy." He didn’t stop there
though, he went on to say, "He chose to be a hero, and if that's his flash of fame, that's as good as it's going to get, pal. We'll have a long memory."
Cousins’ agent, Matt Sosnick retorted back to the comments by saying, ‘’It's a play within the rules and I imagine his opinion would be vastly different if Posey ran over (Marlins catcher John) Buck on a legal play and Buck was injured."
Posey who underwent a lot of damage has a humble opinion about the whole fiasco commenting that what Cousins did was by the rules, but sliding would have been a better option. The 2010 Rookie of the Year underwent surgery to repair the damage that was caused
by the collision. The damage included a broken bone in the lower region of his left leg and three torn ligaments.
The Giants’ clubhouse immediately did the best to get the whole Sabean’s comments issue under control as they cited emotional outrage as the reason for Sabean’s comments that directly accused Cousins of having intent to injure Posey.
Even though the Giants are willing to cover up their General Manager it should be taken into notice that these comments weren’t made on the day that Posey got injured, or even the next day. They were made a good eight days after the incident, when almost
everyone had cooled off about the incident.
