San Francisco Giants beat Cliff Lee to go one up in World Series (Part 3)
The San Francisco Giants are just a series away from the World Series title and the only obstacle in the way is the American League championship winning team, the Texas Rangers. The National League Champions have a path cut out
for them and on Wednesday, they were looking for a win against the opponents in the 1st fixture of the World Series. Going in with the top players in the squad, the two sides were preparing to collide on the pitch and bring home, accolades that
had yet to be availed.
Timothy LeRoy Lincecum
The San Francisco Giants wanted to start off with the important win and given their history against the Anaheim Angels and the Oakland Athletics, it was wise to start off with the best pitcher in the roster. That meant the side
was going to introduce none other than Tim Lincecum to the game. The shaggy haired pitcher was phenomenal during the regular season and his contribution to the side’s progression in the league was unquantifiable. The 26 year old right hand pitcher was well
on the mark throughout the campaign and he did wonders by striking out the highest number of batters in the National League. He took out 231 hitters and added 16 wins from 33 games starts. The maestro lost 10 along the way but his Earning Runs Average (ERA)
was low at 3.43.
His performance in the post season was something to be awe inspired by. The young offensive pitcher did well against the Atlanta Braves in his match up. He led the team to a 1 – 0 victory over the Atlanta side and pitched a shutout
in a complete, 9 innings. He allowed 2 hits in that fixture and struck out 11 hitters in the bout.
Against the Philadelphia Phillies, he was just as sensational as he was against the Braves. The East side, National League leaders presented Roy Halladay on the mound and given his reputation for pitching a no hitter to the Cincinnati
Reds, Tim was able to carve out a victory against the maestro. Roy was battered by the Giants’ hitters and that gave Lincecum all the room to go through the Phillies lineup with ease. The San Francisco ace struck out 7 hitters and conceded 3 runs off 6 hits
in 7 innings.
The win was monumental but in a return fixture against Halladay in game 5, the maestro faltered as he lost the game, allowing 3 runs off 4 hits. He improved on his figure for strike outs by climbing to 8 and he lowered his ERA
to 3.21.
Clifton Phifer Lee
Cliff Lee was an epicentre for the Texans in attack and it was not a surprise to see him in his best form during the post season, but unlike his cool patch through the playoffs, the maestro had a rocky season with the Rangers.
During his tenure in the league, the ace pitcher conceded 9 games to losses and turned in just 12 matches for wins in 28 game starts. The 32 year old veteran was facing a dip in form but at the strike of the playoffs, the player returned to his natural self
and featured in two fixtures against the Tampa Bay Rays to take his team to a first ever series victory.
He pitched 7 innings in the first game and walked away with an ERA of 1.29. During the game he conceded just 1 run off 5 hits. In addition to that, he struck out 10 hitters. He raised the tally to 11 in the next fixture against
the East side winners as the maestro allowed just a run off 6 hits in a complete 9 innings.
The victory was good enough to get the side a victory and when the match up against the New York Yankees came, Lee pitched a shutout, conceding just 2 hits and striking out a whooping 13.
