San Francisco Giants clinch easy 6-1 victory over reeling San Diego Padres – MLB Recap
The defending World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants easily overpowered the struggling San Diego Padres 6-1 to grab their second straight triumph in the four-game series at Petco Park in San Diego on Friday, July 15.
Giants dominated right from the start of the game and kept their control until they finalised their victory. Tim Lincecum started his 20th start with ballistic projectiles and held the already struggling batting line-up to no-score in his first three innings.
He consumed only run in the third inning but did no destabilise and punched out seven batters over six innings to grasp his eighth win of the season.
"He wasn't as crisp as we've seen him in the past," Padres’ manager Bud Black said. "Nevertheless, it's good stuff, competitive stuff. We had some good at-bats against him, but we couldn't string together any hits."
This win improved the record of the 27-year-old to 8-7 with a 2.99 ERA. Jeff Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Guillermo Mota carried the impetus to later innings and the Padres stayed in a belligerent position.
Pablo Sandoval hit a sacrifice to start the game with one run but he failed to make any hit over his two at-bats and his hitting streak ended to 22 games. Cody Ross hammered an implausible one-run homer in the second. Andres Torres scored an RBI single in
the fifth to start his hitting momentum. He played with a good technique to take his team from 3-1 to 6-1 until the end of the seventh inning.
"As good a game as he had, he still gets the day off tomorrow," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's such a hard worker, sometimes we need to back him off a bit."
Like their batting squad, the Padres’ pitching fought to make an impression. Dustin Moseley scattered four runs on seven hits and allowed two walks in six innings. It was his fifth straight and ninth overall loss in 18 starts. He is struggling to get his
third win since his second win against the Houston Astros on June 3.
Ernesto Frieri yielded two runs and two hits while walking one over a single inning. Anthony Bass managed to escape the crushing impetus of Torres and remained scoreless in the last two innings of the game.
Giants’ Hector Sanchez and Padres’ Luis Martinez both played their debut game as pinch hitters. Martinez played his first pitch in the seventh and line out while Sanchez walked in the ninth.
