San Francisco Giants crushed by St. Louis Cardinals 2-8 – MLB Recap
The San Francisco Giants crushed by St. Louis Cardinals 2-8 in the first game of their four-match regular series encounter on Monday, August 6 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Giants could have performed much better with their current hitting and pitching prowess but the Cardinals who remained more consistent during the whole game, proved too good for their opponents and won in style.
Giants’ experienced players failed miserably and were never seen in their natural form which proved one of the losing factors for them as well.
San Francisco's hitters and pitchers did not show any fighting spirit and could not save the game for their team.
San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy, "He was OK, they just did a great job of hitting him, I thought he had good stuff. That's a good hitting ballclub. They're not at the top offensively for no reason."
Cardinals’ on the other hand, remained steady towards their objective and later in the last inning, they rattled the Giants with complete precision.
Their hitters and at the same time pitchers supported each other’s play and won a decent victory for the team. They never showed any loop-holes in their game and eventually won the game.
St. Louis manager Mike Matheny, "You never know when you start the game with a leadoff (homer) like that, He was able to stay in there and find that sinker. He did a great job."
Starter Jake Westbrook played wonderfully and kept his opposing hitters under pressure.
"I made a mistake to the first hitter and then after that I settled in," Westbrook said. "I threw the game I think I'm capable of throwing."
He remained calm on the mound for six solid innings in which he allowed only two runs and seven hits. He also received only two earned runs and he struck-out four Giants’ hitters on his consistent 3.76 ERA.
Giants’ starter Matt Cain allowed five crucial runs in his 5.2 innings. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs as he was also smashed with a homer on his 3.01 ERA.
