San Francisco Giants defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 for second-straight triumph – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants romped to a 5-2 triumph in the second straight game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, Phoenix, on Wednesday, June 15.
First baseman Aubrey Huff led the game off with an RBI single off the Diamondbacks’ starter, Joe Saunders, in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner, on the other hand, restricted the opposition to no-score in his first
two innings. In the third inning though, he allowed a game tier homer to the Diamondbacks’ Willie Bloomquist.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Giants’ Pat Burrell scored a game leading RBI single but Bumgarner again allowed a one-run homer, this time to Chris Young, the Diamondbacks top slugger. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Giants’ second baseman Bill
Hall took the game to 3-2 with an RBI single. This time, Bumgarner managed to defend his team with powerful pitches.
He kept the Diamondbacks scoreless in the sixth inning to complete his game. He struck-out six batters and walked only one batter to earn his third win of the season. The 21-year-old left-hand pitcher managed to earn this win after two consecutive losses.
"It's kind of funny. I feel not much different than the last few games when it's been the other way around," Bumgarner said. "I feel like I've thrown some better games before today and lost. Today it was a battle. But I feel good about it."
His relievers provided him the best back up. Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, and closer Brian Wilson each tossed no-score one inning to cement the club’s 39th win of the season.
The Diamondbacks might have tied the game in the eighth inning, if Kelly Johnson could have succeeded in making an RBI single against the Giants’ reliever Sergio Romo. However, Aaron Rowand, who was covering right-field quickly grabbed the hard hit and threw
it to short-stop Miguel Tejada, who made a fast throw to the catcher to take Johnson.
In the ninth inning, Eli Whiteside scored two RBIs to take the lead to a 5-2 unassailable position. Both scored against the Diamondbacks’ closer Joseph Jones Putz.
The Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson was surprised the way the Giants expressed their strength.
"In that situation Rowand made a really good play on it," Gibson said. "He went into the corner and it looked like the ball popped right up to him. They made a picture-perfect relay play."
Saunders allowed three runs on eight hits, walked three and struck-out four batters and lost his seventh game of the season. Reliever David Hernandez remained scoreless in the eighth inning.
