San Francisco Giants defeat Atlanta Braves 7-5 – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants managed to escape the losing skid with stunning performance of their batting line-up in the third outing against the Atlanta Braves for a 7-5 win at Turner Field in Atlanta on August 17 to comeback in the series 2-1.
The hitting journey starter by Pablo Sandoval in the first inning ended with Aubrey Huff in the ninth inning. Orlando Cabrera, Eli Whiteside, Cody Ross and Matt Cain also joined hands to help the Giants came out of their losing spell.
Sandoval led the game off with his line drive RBI single off the Braves’ starter Jair Jurrjens to take 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Although the Giants’ starter Matt Cain allowed a game tier RBI generating walk in the bottom of the first inning,
the Giants batting line-up did not lose their hitting impetus.
After a delay of two innings, Orlando Cabrera kicked off the four-run fourth inning with his beautiful hit to right-side for an RBI single. Eli Whiteside took the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single and Matt Cain and Pablo Sandoval widen it to 5-1 with their
RBI singles.
"I think we won," manager Bruce Bochy quipped. "Just when you think you have a chance to cross your legs for a second, we're facing the tying run up there."
Cain worked the best he can provide to his batter and tossed gritty sliders and sinkers to hold the Braves to just one run until the end of his eight innings spell. Cain went for five hits and one walk but struck-out nine batters to record his tenth win
of the season.
"Mechanically, in the windup, I wasn't quite going right," he said. "So I switched to the stretch to try to keep stuff a little more in line and found that good rhythm and just tried to stay with it."
However, as soon as he handed the ball to relief hurler Dan Runzler, the Braves bounced back and struck three trouble-creating runs. Jason Heyward drove in a single to left-field to score second run for the Braves. Then Julio Lugo scored third run due to
an error by the Giants’ short-stop Cabrera. Martin Prado then made an RBI double producing hit and took his team to 7-5.
The Giants’ closer Jeff Affeldt however managed to escape the pressure situation with his fast sliders and the Giants won their 67th game of the season.
