San Francisco Giants defeat Chicago Cubs 6-3 for second triumph of the day – MLB Update
After comprehensively beating the Chicago Cubs in the first of the double-header game, the San Francisco Giants once again crushed the struggling Cubs 6-3 with devastating hitting in the fifth inning at Wrigley Field, Chicago on Tuesday June 28.
The Giants were trailing 2-1 until the start of the fifth inning when their batting took control to crush the Cubs’ starter Rodrigo Lopez. Pablo Sandoval led the foundation to a five-run fifth inning with a line drive single. Nate added another single which
followed by an RBI double by Brandon Crawford and RBI single by Eli Whiteside.
After posting an irrefutable 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning, the Giants’ bull-pen was looking for some back up from Barry Zito. He recently returned from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and did not let the Cubs’ stabilise with his swinging fastballs.
He took three batters and allowed one two- run homer over seven innings to earn his first win despite missing 61 games this season.
His manager Bruce Bochy was quite impressed with the way he made his comeback in the Majors. Bochy said, "It's a big game for us to come back and win the second one, but for Z's first start back, I thought it was a great outing."
It was Zito’ second outing since April 16 when he was placed on the disabled list with a right mid-foot sprain after he landed awkwardly while catching a bunt pop-up against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was the first time in Zito’s 12-year career that he
was put on the disabled list.
Relief pitcher Guillermo Mota gave away a third run on a homer to Aaron Ramirez in the ninth inning. Javier Lopez took a ball from him but was allowed a walk before closer Brain Wilson repeated his same dazzling pitching to take his club into their 46th
win of the season.
With this win, San Francisco maintained their doubleheader winning history over the Chicago Cubs. The Giants have not lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Cubs since August 3, 1980.
The Cubs’ ace Lopez yielded four runs on eight hits over four innings and lost his second straight game. Reliever John Grabow pitched loose and allowed two runs on three hits in less than an inning pitched. However, Jeff Samardzija resisted and took out
three Giants’ batters and allowed just one walk over two crucial innings. His closer followed his path and remained scoreless in the last two innings, but until now, the Giants had cemented their win.
The Cubs have not won a series since the mid of June when they overpowered their league rivals Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. However, now their manager Mike Quade has to think differently if he wants his team to survive in the season.
