San Francisco Giants defeat Houston Astros 2-1 – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants recorded a walk off 2-1 win in the tenth against the Houston Astros in the third outing at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Saturday, August 27 to take a 2-1 lead in the four game series.
The game was tied in the top of the fifth inning and then pitchers from both sides strived hard to save their teams from getting down. Spectators were expecting more innings when the game entered below the tenth. However, Mark DeRosa went to first with a
line drive single and then stole second on Mike Fontenot’s strike-out. With DeRosa on second, Jeff Keppinger waited for a suitable pitch and then stroked a fast line drive to right-centre, scoring DeRosa for a walk off victory.
"That's not his forte but he had a good jump," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "Mark has been through a lot and now he's getting a chance to play a little bit. He got the big hit and scored the winning run."
Rookie Eric Surkamp started his Major League Baseball career in a solid way. The 24-year-old hurler, who was promoted from Double-A, did not allow a run until the top of the fifth and then completed his six innings maiden start striking-out four batters.
Eric was given a chance because of the unconfirmed situation of Jonathan Sanchez, as he was on the disabled list due to an ankle injury.
"That was amazing," said Surkamp, who found out he was making the start late Thursday night. "When my name was announced and the fans cheered, it sent chills down my back. To have that kind of support was amazing.”
Eric has been excellent for Giants’ double-A Richmond this year, taking 165 strike-outs in 23 appearances and dominating the season 10-4 with a 2.02 ERA. He was having a luxury of making his maiden start against the weakest squad of the MLB, but he could
not take the advantage completely.
However, a strong backup saved him from a poor MLB start. Guillermo Mota worked one-hitter two innings and Santiago Casilla pitched no-hitter inning while Jeff Affeldt closed the game with no-hitter inning. He grabbed his third win of the season with a 2.48
ERA.
Astros’ starter Brett Myers received an early single but made a strong comeback to get his team into game. Myers allowed only two hits and three walks while striking-out seven batters over seven innings. His game winning performance was a sigh of relief
for the Astros’ manager Brad Mills, but Fernando Rodriguez turned down all the amusement in the tenth inning.
Although the Astros are the weakest team, they are working hard to make their name better before ruling out of the regular season.
