San Francisco Giants defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 – MLB Update
The pitching line-up of San Francisco Giants sparked as they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 at AT&T Park on Monday, July 18.
Ryan Vogelsong pitched unhittable seven innings to pave the way for victory for the Giants.
Vogelsong turned out to be the hero coupled with the two relievers who pitched perfectly to outplay the Dodgers’ offence.
"This guy's done everything and beyond since he's come up here," said Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy, who ran the NL team and picked Vogelsong for the squad. "It's nice to see him finally qualify and now maybe get recognized as he should."
Facing criticism after he appeared in the All-Star game, Vogelsong, did not let the hostile views take their toll on him.
"Doesn't matter," Vogelsong said. "It's important for me to prove (Bochy) right. They can say whatever they want to say. It doesn't bother me one bit but he stuck his neck out for me to pick me so I want to show people he made a good decision."
The Giants’ starter Vogelsong started the game with remarkable speed, throwing the Dodgers’ hitters in immense confusion. Not even once did he seem willing to allow any of the Dodgers’ hitters to score.
His innings remained effective, so did his rival Chad Billingsley’s. The two starters dominated the game for a considerably long period of time. While Vogelsong completed the four innings, scoreless, Billingsley fell victim to Pablo Sandoval in the fourth.
Sandoval homered to right to score the first run for the Giants, backed by a thoroughly strong defence that Vogelsong put on. Pitching right into the sixth inning, Vogelsong remained invulnerable and fast.
The game took a completely magical turn in the sixth inning when Billingsley came on while his team was trailing by a run. Little did Billingsley realise what awaited him in arguably the most entertaining and eventful inning of the game.
Nate Schierholtz singled to centre to double the lead for the San Francisco followed by a two-run RBI of Cody Ross who gave an ultimate edge to his team, leaving Los Angeles to strain.
Before Billingsley could settle, he was subject to another hit by Brandon Crawford, taking the Giants’ lead up to 5-0. By the time Billingsley wrapped up the sixth inning, he had given up nine hits and five runs.
Ryan Vogelsong allowed seven hits and had five strike-outs to conclude his seventh, with his team having a safe 5-0 lead.
The reliever Jeremy Affeldt pitched a shut-out eighth and Ramon Ramirez went for a scoreless ninth inning to formally seal the 5-0 victory for the Giants in the first of three-game series.
