San Francisco Giants defeat Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 – MLB Update
San Francisco Giants put in a tremendous performance as they beat Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Thursday, July 28.
Tim Lincecum proved the Giants are not in need of further offensive players if his team kept playing in Philadelphia, as the Giants have become the biggest threat for the pitching depth of the Phillies in the recent games.
"We can beat them," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said. "I know we can. They're not in our head."
"I felt fine, a little fatigued but I just tried to keep a good pace," Lincecum said.
Third baseman Pablo Sandoval hammered a 360-feet long one-run homer off the Phillies’ relatively struggling pitcher Kyle Kendrick in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Nate Schierholtz added a second run in the fourth inning and Aaron Rowand
scored an RBI double in the seventh inning to finalise the score at 4-0.
"Our pitchers did a great job and we got the hits when we needed," manager Bruce Bochy said. "They're a great club."
After Lincecum completed his six innings, Ramon Ramirez took the ball from him and tossed 12 strikes of 18 pitches but he allowed a single to the Phillies’ Chase Utley in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the only run, the Giants’ pitchers allowed.
Jeremy Affeldt tossed one-hitter one inning to get his 11th hold, while Sergio Romo threw only two pitches for his 18th hold and Brian Wilson struck-out two batters in one-hitter ninth inning to snatch his 33rd save of the
season.
Kendrick allowed all four runs that the Giants scored in just over six innings. Juan Perez and Brad Lidge each tossed scoreless innings. Michael Stutes and David Herndon each went for no-score one inning.
After this win, the Giants have reached closer to the Phillies on top of the win chart with 61. The Phillies are leading the Majors with 65 wins. However after these two losses their confidence will stumble and the Pittsburgh Pirates will be looking to use
this for their benefit.
