San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 2-1 to tie series two all – MLB Recap
The San Francisco Giants overpowered the San Diego Padres 2-1 in the rubber outing of the four game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Thursday, July 7 to tie the series at 2-all
The Giants’ ace Barry Zito played his fourth-straight exceptional game to take his back-to-back wins. He struck-out seven batters and allowed the only run in the seventh inning on four hits to grab his third win of the season. He threw 67 strikes of 108
pitches in eight innings.
It was Zito’s incomparable recovery after spending two and half months on a disabled list due to a sprained right foot injury. He also achieved his first win against the Padres since August of 2008.
The Giants’ batting line-up provided somewhat good support with their bat, as they scored one run each in the third and sixth inning. The runs proved helpful in a low scoring game as the Giants grabbed their 50th win of the season.
Eli Whiteside led the game with his dazzling one-run homer off the Padres’ starter Chris Luebke in the bottom of the third inning to provide Zito relief in pitching. Then Pat Burrell scored an RBI single in the sixth inning to take his team to a strong 2-0
lead.
Closer Brian Wilson also provided strong back up to batters and Zito with his scoreless ninth innings. He tossed eight strikes of 12 pitches in this inning to get his 25th save of the season.
Luebke on the other hand allowed two runs on five hits walked one and made eight strike-outs but his performance could not prevent him from his third loss of the season. Reliever Pat Neshek and closer Luke Gregerson each tossed one-hitter one innings but
they did not get support from the batting squad.
Padres played 30 at-bats but made just five hits over total 120 pitches they faced.
During the fourth inning, the Giants received bad news when their second baseman Bill Hall reported a leg laceration. He left the game and remained out throughout the game. However, the Giants’ Pablo Sandoval improved his hitting streak to 18 games after
touching a line drive hit in the sixth inning.
The Giants will now host their league rivals New York Mets for a three-game series with their undisputed ace Ryan Vogelsong to open the series against the Mets' Robert Allen Dickey.
