San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 4-3 – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants’ pinch hitter Chris Stewart chipped into the air to take the team into a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres in the eleventh inning at Petco Park in San Diego on Sunday, July 17 to take the series 3-1.
The Padres were leading the game with 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, but the Giants’ Andre Torres touched an RBI single to tie the game. Pitchers from both sides, tossed perfect innings to force the game into the eleventh inning, in which pinch hitter
Chris drove in a game leading run with a suicide chip. He also managed a glossy double-play in the bottom of the eleventh to help the Giants nip their 4-3 win.
"We played a little of their type of baseball today," Stewart said. "We got runners on base however we could, stole a base, advanced to third on the error. We were able to put pressure on them and come away with a big run."
Ryan Ludwick took the Padres one-run ahead in the first inning, but the Giants’ Cody Ross tied it at the top of the second inning. Then Nate Schierholtz scored an RBI single to take the Giants into 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Padres’
Orlando Hudson, Everth Cabrera and Cameron Maybin combined to create two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Padres were enjoying the 3-2 lead, when Andre Torres added an RBI single off Mat Latos to add a twist in the game.
Giants’ Matt Cain allowed three runs on three this, walked two and struck-out nine batters over six innings. However, he could not generate his ninth win of the season. Jeff Affeldt, Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez, and Brian Wilson carried the same path set by
the Cain and finalised the 55th win in the 2011 MLB regular season.
Latos also allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one and struck-out five batters over seven innings. He however escaped his eleventh loss of the season. Mike Adams, Heath Bell and Josh Spence managed to toss their innings without allowing any run, but
closer Chad Qualls allowed a single to receive his fourth loss of the season.
The Padres’ catcher Kyle Phillips entered for five at-bats including a one in the eleventh inning, but failed to produce a game for which he was known in the Majors.
"He doesn't need to feel anything. He does a good job. He's a great catcher," Latos said about Phillips. "That's just the way the game goes. He will bounce back, he will be fine. He's thrown runners out, he's caught great games."
However, the Padres’ manager Bud Black expect something new from his batting and pitching line-up in the next game against the rivals Florida Marlins at the Sun Life Stadium, on Tuesday, July 19.
