San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 6-2 – MLB Recap
A story of a stunning comeback has been written by the San Francisco Giants, as they conquered the San Diego Padres 6-2 in the first day out of the four-game series at the Petco Park in San Diego on Thursday, July 14.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth inning, the Giants’ Aubrey Huff hammered an astounding homer off the Padres’ closer Heath Bell to tie the game at 9-all and force it to extra innings. After two scoreless innings, Mike Fontenot scored a leading run on
a walk by Luke Gregerson while Pablo Sandoval, Nate Schierholtz and Aubrey Huff combined to score four more runs to cement the Giants 6-1 win in the 12th inning.
Brian Wilson stumbled a little but managed to snatch his 27th save of the season. Madison Bumgarner allowed only one run on seven hits and struck-out four batters over six innings. Ramon Ramirez and Santiago Casilla each tossed two shut-out innings while
Sergio Romo threw a no-hitter inning. Casilla struck-out two batters to earn his second win of the season.
Javier Lopez was tough before allowing a walk in the 12th inning. He allowed the Padres to score their second run of the game in the bottom of the 12th inning.
The Padres’ reliever Luke Gregerson had a nightmare day, as he allowed five runs on one hit. He allowed three walks over only 26 pitches.
The day was not in Aaron Harang’s favour, as despite pitching seven no-score innings, he failed to nip his two-game losing streak. The 33-year-old pitcher has a 7-2 record with 3.19 ERA. Mike Adams followed his path and tossed no-hitter eighth inning but
Bell failed to save the game for his club and allowed a devastating homer.
Chad Qualls, Josh Spence and Ernesto Frieri each did not yield any run.
Both starters kept the game into their hands in the first half of the match. The Giants’ starter Bumgarner allowed game opening single in the bottom of the second inning but made a perfect come-back.
In the 12 innings long game, both teams played nine hits but the Giants earned six runs while the San Diego managed to get only two runs. San Francisco entered in 45 at-bats and Padres landed in 44 at-bats. The Giants’ Pablo Sandoval made a hit in the first
inning to extend his hitting streak to 22-games.
