San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 6-4 – MLB Update
San Francisco Giants romped to a 6-4 win over the San Diego Padres in the second outing of the three-game series at Petco Park in San Diego on Tuesday, September 6 to take a 2-0 lead.
Giants scored two runs in the second, one in the third and one each in the fifth, eighth and ninth inning. Brett Pill, who was waiting to make his debut since he was called up Wednesday, made his opening Major League game memorable. He launched a 383-feet
long two run homer off the Padres’ starter Wade LeBlanc in the second inning to provide his club an early 2-0 lead.
"It's something you dream about when you're a kid," Pill said. "I've seen him a few times in the minors, that pitcher, and figured he'd try to throw me a changeup and get me to hit into a double play."
Pill also levelled the 24-year-old record made in 1986 by Will Clark, who also launched a homer in his first big league plate appearance.
Eric Surkamp, another rookie, playing his second career game, allowed only three runs on five hits over five innings to record his first MLB win. He tossed relatively better 46 strikes of 76 pitches and permitted only one walk.
Manager Bruce Bochy was pleased the way both young players started their careers.
Bochy said, "Nice day for those two young players. It's historic, to hit a home run in your first at-bat. It's nice to see those guys come out and do what they did and help us win a ballgame."
Carlos Beltran scored three RBIs and improved his majors record to 76 but calculating the Giants stay in National League West, he would not get much chances to elevate these to 100. Beltran made an RBI each in the third, fifth and the ninth inning. Orlando
Cabrera made an RBI single in the eighth inning.
Padres’ Catcher Nick Hundley, Andy Parrino, Kyle Blanks and Anthony Rizzo each scored an RBI single. Nick launched a homer to centre in the second inning.
Giants have won 75 games and they will have to make at least 10 wins in a row to be considered for a post season position.
