San Francisco Giants defeat St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 – MLB Update
Aaron Rowand struck a forceful single on Friday, April 8 to enable the San Francisco Giants to score a decisive victory over St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 at AT&T Park, San Francisco.
It was an outstanding battle that resulted in one of the breathtaking close encounters of this season in which the Giants narrowly grabbed victory from the Cardinals.
When Jonathan Sanchez came to pitch for the Giants, Ryan Theriot was the first one from the Cardinals to face him. Sanchez rendered all the batters of the Cardinals unable to go for any hit, thereby reducing the team to no runs. Jake Westbrook came to pitch
for St. Louis who was faced by Andres Torres, Freddy Sanchez and Aubrey Huff, as they were unable to get a hit.
The Cardinals opened their account when Tyler Greene took on Sanchez. He singled to centre, where David Freese scored. The second inning for the Giants went scoreless.
In the third inning when the Cardinals had a 1-0 lead over the Giants, it was the Freddy Sanchez who did the needed, as he hit Westbrook, doubled to right and Jonathan Sanchez scored to enable the Giants to a 2-1 lead at the end of the third inning.
It was not until the bottom of the sixth inning when Pat Burrell of the Giants went against Westbrook, who was pitching for the Cardinals. Burrell homered to centre to score a run.
The Cardinals came back in the match at the top of the eighth inning when Albert Pujols singled to left where Ryan Theriot scored as Jeremy Affeldt came pitching for the Giants. All the same, as the 9th inning brought another opportunity for the
Cardinals to take on Brian Wilson of the Giants. Ryan Theriot singled to left where Molina and Descalso scored for the St. Louis, thereby leveling the score with two runs.
A 4-3 lead gave the Cardinals some confidence. However, the Giants made a come-back when Pablo Sandoval singled to right on Ryan Franklin’s ball in the ninth inning. Two hits in this inning and one run levelled the score which meant an extra inning was to
follow.
The close event being witnessed by thousands of fans in the ground, which came in the aftermath of flag raising ceremony by the Giants, came to end when Aaron Rowand singled to deep left in the 12th inning to officially seal the defending champion’s
victory. The win could not certainly be more joyful since it was on Friday last year, in the same month, that Giants had their glorious success in the World Series. San Francisco managed to dominate the Cardinals in the end.
