San Francisco Giants defeat St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 - MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants romped to a 7-3 victory over St. Louis Cardinals in the first outing of the three-game series at Busch Stadium on Monday, May 30.
Cody Ross launched a stunning 440-feet long one-run homer off the Cardinals’ starter Kyle McClellan in the top of the second inning to provide the Giants a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Miguel Tejada blistered to centre-field to earn an RBI single to elevate
the advantage 2-0.
The Cardinals’ were not ready to let the Giants enjoy this lead for long as Allen Craig, the Cardinals’ second baseman, scored zero-breaking single and Albert Pujols made a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
The game was tied at two-all when Brandon Crawford, playing as short-stop for the Giants, posted a lead-generating single in the top of the fourth inning. Following this, Andres Torres having all bases loaded, blistered a 369-feet long four-runs grand slam
to right-field to gain a 7-2 lead.
The Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner, who after tossing two scoreless innings gave two runs in the third inning, came back into track and remained scoreless in his later innings. The 21-year-old pitcher gave two runs on six hits, allowed two walks and struck-out
five batters to earn his second win of the season.
"He's pitched well enough to have a much better record. He knows it," manager Bruce Bochy said. "For a young kid he's got great poise, he doesn't get caught up in the elements."
Bumgarner handed the four-seam ball to reliever Ramon Ramirez, who readily gave away a homer to Albert Pujols in the bottom of the eighth inning. However, Ramirez recuperated in a promising manner, completed his inning without allowing further hits, and
struck-out one batter.
Closer Sergio Romo threw a perfect last inning and struck-one batter to earn his club their 29th win of the series against the strong Cardinals. Currently, St. Louis are leaders in the Majors this season with 32 triumphs.
McClellan gave away seven runs on seven hits and walked two batters while managing only two strike-outs to bear his second loss of the season. This win has sent the pitcher into a 6-2 record with a 3.86 ERA in 2011.
Relievers’ Miguel Batista, Brian Tallet, Jason Motte and closer Trever Miller remained scoreless in their short spells but the Cardinals remained helpless with the bat. Cardinals touched just seven hits in combined 34 at-bats.
