San Francisco Giants defeat Washington Nationals 5-4 in 13 innings game – MLB Update
Aubrey Huff and Nate Schierholtz scored tying runs in the eighth inning while Freddy Sanchez touched a leading run as the San Francisco Giants overpowered the League rivals Washington Nationals 5-4 after an electrifying competition in the first outing of
the three-game series at AT&T Park, San Francisco on Sunday, June 6.
The Giants were scoreless until the seventh inning when Aaron Rowand launched a dazzling homer to left-field off the Nationals’ starter John Lannan, to trim the lead to 4-1. Then Aubrey Huff drove in an RBI single and Nate Schierholtz added a game tying
RBI double to take his team back into the game after severe pressure.
Giants have gone under extreme pressure right from the start of the game when the Nationals’ Michael Morse hammered a homer off the Giants’ starter Tim Lincecum in the second inning for an early lead.
In third inning, the Nationals made their strong hold over the outing, touching three vital runs while the Giants were scoreless. Laynce Nix scored an RBI single and Morse added a double to take the Nationals to 4-0 lead. The Nationals were in the perfect
condition to snatch the game as their starter Lannan has not given even a single run over his first seven innings.
However, the condition was all to gather different after eighth inning, the Giants managed to take the game back into their hand and then they were forced to move into extra innings. After the game entered extra innings, the Giants recuperated brilliantly
with the ball as Brian Wilson, Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez did not give any run and their batters took their advantage in the bottom of the 13th inning.
The Giants’ Chris Stewart occupied first base on a walk in the start of the thirteenth inning and then Andres Torres stole first base allowing Stewart to move into second. Miguel Tejada grounded out to short-stop on a fielder’s choice before Freddy Sanchez
hit a line drive for a game winning run.
"Obviously that happens quite a bit up here," said backup catcher Chris Stewart. "We've done some crazy things this year and some crazy things last year. We're never out of a game."
It was the 34th win for the World Series defending champions in 2011 while the Nationals lost their 34th game of the season.
