San Francisco Giants enjoy first three-game series-sweep of Colorado Rockies in 2011 - MLB Update
Game 1: San Francisco Giants 4 – Colorado Rockies 3
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-3 at AT&T Park on Friday, May 6.
Rockies did not prove a piece of cake and gained an early 3-0 lead until the third inning. Short-stop Troy Tulowitzki, Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez touched a single each off Matt Cain, who also gave two walks and got four strike-outs over seven innings.
The Giants were in trouble until the sixth with a three-run deficit, as the Rockies’ starter, Ubaldo Jimenez had pitched a strong six innings and struck out seven batters. However, Buster Posey hit a lead-off RBI single in the sixth and the Giants came back
in the game 1-3.
While the Giants’ reliever, Jeff Affeldt and closer Brian Wilson held the Rockies scoreless in the next innings, Nate Schierholtz added an RBI double and Freddy Sanchez scored a leading run to grab their first game of the three-game series.
The Giants were coming off a 5-2 defeat against the New York Mets in the final outing of the three-game series, which they won 2-1.
Game 2: San Francisco Giants 3 – Colorado Rockies 2
After winning a close first game, the confidence of the San Francisco Giants had bounced back as they again entered AT&T Park on Saturday, May 7 to face the Colorado Rockies in the second match of the three game series.
This time, Buster Posey added an RBI single off Rockies’ starter, Clayton Mortensen in the first to provide an early 1-0 lead to the Giants. Mortensen, then recovered brilliantly and held the Giants until the fifth inning, when Freddy Sanchez added a second
RBI single to take the Giants into a strong 2-0 position.
Madison Bumgarner, who restricted the Rockies to no-score in the first six innings, gave a 2-2 tier RBI double to the Rockies’ first baseman Todd Helton in the seventh.
No one could predict the winner until the Giants got a chance with Aaron Rowand on third, Freddy Sanchez on second and Mike Fontenot hit a sacrifice in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch a 2-0 lead.
Game 3: San Francisco Giants 3 – Colorado Rockies 0
Having their best chance to earn their first series-sweep in 2011, the Giants came to the AT&T Park on Sunday, May 8 and starter Ryan Vogelsong crushed the Colorado Rockies to snatch a 3-0 lead not only in the game but also in the series.
Vogelsong tossed impressively to give just one hit and one walk while striking-out four batters over six innings to earn his second win of the season. He moved his record to 2-0 with a 3.05 ERA.
Reliever Javier Lopez and closer Brian Wilson also remained scoreless and allowed one hit each over their short one inning spell.
While the pitchers outclassed the opposition, the Giants’ left-fielder Cody Ross made all three runs for his team. Ross added an RBI single in the fourth inning and then launched a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the sixth to cement the first
series sweep for San Francisco in the season.
