San Francisco Giants escape series sweep beating Houston Astros 6-4 in finale – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants romped to a 6-4 win in the last game against the Houston Astros at the Minute Maid Park on Sunday, August 21 to avoid a series sweep.
The Giants were struggling in the first two games of the series against the weakest club of the 2011 regular season, but in this game, Pablo Sandoval helped the Giants came out of the pugnacious position.
The game was tied to four-all until the top of the fourth inning and it moved into the eleventh inning when third baseman Pablo Sandoval blistered a 404-feet huge homer for two runs to get the lead 6-4. Then Ramon Ramirez tossed the perfect bottom inning
to get his third save and the Giants’ 68th win of the 2011 Regular season.
"I'm tired," Sandoval said. "I just was looking for a pitch to hit. Now we go home, got a day off and come Tuesday, play hard. I have been hurting so I will enjoy that day. I just want to play and help team win a game."
Brandon Belt opened the game with his 421-feet long three-run homer for a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Giants’ starter Dan Runzler could not defend this lead and gave away four runs in the bottom of this inning.
Astros’ catcher Carlos Corporan, second baseman Jose Altuve each scored an RBI single while J.D. Martinez drove in an RBI double to get his team into 4-3 lead.
Giants’ Mike Fontenot tied the game at four-all with his sacrifice hit for RBI single in the top of the fourth inning.
After this, the pitchers from both sides bounced back and held the opposing batters to no score until the top of the eleventh inning. Giants’ Guillermo Mota worked three scoreless innings while Santiago Casilla and Jeff Affeldt each threw two scoreless innings.
The Astros' Wesley Wright, Wilton Lopez, Sergio Escalona and Francisco Rodriguez held the Giants scoreless over their short spells.
Mark Melancon received the game defeating blow in the eleventh otherwise, he was brilliant with his 15 strikes of 24 pitches over two innings span.
