San Francisco Giants gain ground in National League West race
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Tuesday taking revenge for a ninth inning loss to the Rockies the previous night. The Giants were able to take advantage of a three-run eighth inning to take the second game of a three-game series at AT&T Park.
With the win, the Giants climbed closer to the San Diego Padres in the National League west standings. The Giants now trail the Padres by four games after San Diego lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Giants also remain 1 ½ games back of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL wild card race.
Andres Torres kicked-off a three run inning in the eighth with a solo shot to give the Giants a 3-2 lead. Buster Posey then closed out the scoring in the eighth with a two-run double.
Madison Bumgarner was solid in six inning of work for the Giants allowing only one run and five hits. Jeremy Affeldt was credited with the win despite giving up a home run and improved his record to 4-3.
Esmil Rogers pitched into the sixth inning for the Rockies giving up two runs on only four hits. Matt Belisle took the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth to drop his record to 6-5.
The Giants opened the scoring in the first inning when Freddy Sanchez, who reached base with a double, was able to cross the plate after a balk by Rogers. The Rockies tied the game up in the second after loading the bases with one out. Clint Barnes brought in the run with a sacrifice fly.
The Rockies then threatened again in the third and in the fourth but stranded runners in scoring position in both innings.
The Giants took the lead in the fifth after Bumgarner helped his own cause with a two-out double bringing in Juan Uribe who had reached base with a single.
After both teams failed to score in the sixth and seventh innings, Melvin Mora hit a solo shot in the eighth off Affeldt to tie the game at 2-2 before setting the stage for the Giants three-run rally in their half of the eighth.
The Rockies, who had won 7 of their last 8 games, ended up stranding six runners and went 1-for-7 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Brian Wilson came on in relief for the Giants in the ninth inning, retiring the Rockies in order for his 37th save on the season.
