San Francisco Giants lose to St. Louis Cardinals 4-6 in Game 1 of NLCS – MLB Recap
San Francisco Giants lost to St. Louis Cardinals 4-6 in Game 1 of National League Championship Series on Sunday, October 14 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California.
Giants played poorly from start of the game and lost bitterly in the end. San Francisco did not pitch well and could not concentrate on their batting. This provided a clear advantage to the Cardinals as they certainly hammered the Giants with force and took a great victory in the end.
Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner pitched 3.2 innings, received six runs and eight hits along with two homers. He struck-out two while his ERA rose to 14.73.
"Right now we feel like everyone's feeding off each other, If one guy does something, you want to go out and match it and try to keep that momentum going. It shows the confidence that Mike has in this bullpen. It makes us want to play better for him. He hands the ball off and he knows what he's doing," reliever Joe Kelly said.
Though later none of the Giants’ pitchers allowed any run but still they could not save the game and lost with a two-run margin.
Giants’ batting line-up also failed and disappointed their manager. They could not capitalise on their hitting skills which eventually proved disastrous for the Giants.
Only few batters were able to connect well and score. This included Angel Pagan, Marco Scutaro, Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt and Gregor Blanco.
"They put together some better at-bats than us, They hit some homers and were up 6-0. That's a pretty good lead in the playoffs. We tried to battle back. We did our best but it wasn't our night," Giants' centre fielder Angel Pagan said.
Marco Scutaro scored one run and smashed two hits on his five at-bats. He played Cardinals’ pitchers well and maintained his slugging percentage of .400.
Left fielder Blanco added one run and smashed one hit along with two RBIs on his four at-bats. He did well and maintained his slugging percentage at .750.
Despite some Giants' players showed resilience but overall it was Cardinals’ consistent pitching which took the game away from them.
