San Francisco Giants rebound for 8-3 win over San Diego Padres – MLB Update
A wounded San Francisco Giants retaliated with a brilliant performance in the club’s 8-3 dominating win over the San Diego Padres in the opening outing of the three-game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Monday, September 12.
Chris Beltran led the Giants off touching a high hit off the Padres’ starter Aaron Harang for a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning. An inning later, Cody Ross contributed a ballistic one-run homer before Aubrey Huff, Justin Keppinger and Pablo
Sandoval joined hands to record the first base running score of the game.
"Why not?" said Ross, who also singled, doubled and scored three times. "We're not going to give in. We're the defending champs and we've got something to prove. We're going to play through and see what happens."
Giants took the game into their hands with a 4-0 lead and their starter Eric Surkamp restricted the opposition to no-score until the bottom of the third. However, Surkamp gave away a run in the fourth and then two in the sixth to help the Padres reduce the
lead to 4-3.
Despite giving seven hits, three runs and one walk without any strikeiout, Surkamp won his second outing of the season with a 3.24 ERA.
Cody Ross added another RBI and the Pablo Sandoval opened his home-run hit to finalise the score to 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy was impressed the way his batters gained back their impetus.
"It's good to see the guys loosen up and swing the bats like we're capable of," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We're trying to finish up strong. We're hanging by a thread, but it's not over."
Pitching depth also found their lost momentum but it may still not be enough to take the Giants back into the post-season contest.
Steve Edlefsen, Dan Runzler, Ramon Ramirez and Sergio Romo each did not cost any run over their short innings.
Padres’ right-fielder Chris Denorfia, left-fielder Kyle Blanks and second baseman Orlando Hudson each added an RBI single to join three runs.
Harang allowed four runs on six hits and walked two batters to bear his sixth loss and dropped to 13-6 record with a 3.85 ERA.
